A Recap of the play Silent Sky and More to Come from The UC Theatre Department
By Amber Simpkins
University of the Cumberlands’ Theatre Department debuted its first performance of the year with the play Silent Sky by Lauren Gunderson. Based on the true story of Henrietta Leavitt and her groundbreaking contributions to astronomy, the production provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by women working in a male-dominated field at Harvard in the early 1900s.
The cast delivered an outstanding performance, skillfully bringing Henrietta’s story to life through both their acting and crafted costumes. Silent Sky seamlessly weaves historical events, women’s perspectives, feminist themes, and a compelling love story. The play not only entertained but also served as an educational journey through history.
Set predominantly in the Harvard Observatory, the stage design effectively depicted the observatory’s atmosphere. The office-like setting, complete with panels representing walls, wallpaper, desks, bookshelves, and handcrafted replicas of the women’s tools, transported the audience to the early 20th century. The tech crew enhanced the celestial theme with star-shaped lighting on the backdrop, creating a magical environment during crucial moments in the show.
The attention to detail extended to the historically inspired costumes, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the performance. The seamless integration of these elements contributed to a well-executed theatrical experience.
For those who attended the show and developed an interest in the theatre department, numerous opportunities exist for involvement. Whether through auditioning for upcoming productions or volunteering behind the scenes, the department welcomes individuals passionate about theatre. Audition announcements are typically communicated via email and posted on campus flyers.
The dedicated efforts of the UC Theatre Department deserve recognition, and both cast and crew invite everyone to attend their shows. Most productions are free of charge, offering an enjoyable evening for college students. With at least two productions annually, and sometimes more, those captivated by Silent Sky are encouraged to stay informed about upcoming performances. The UC Theatre Department looks forward to welcoming a diverse audience to their future shows.
